Zoonosis is an infectious disease that is naturally transmitted from vertebrate animals to humans, caused by pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, parasites, fungi, or prions.
Zoonotic diseases (zoonoses) are illnesses transmitted between vertebrate animals and humans. They can range from mild to severe and may even cause death. Common carriers include livestock, pets, wildlife, and insects.
A zoonosis or zoonotic disease is an infectious disease of humans caused by a pathogen (an infectious agent, such as a virus, bacterium, parasite, fungus or prion) which is transmitted from a non-human animal to a human. When humans infect non-humans, it is called reverse zoonosis or anthroponosis.
Human infection with animal influenza viruses is rare, as they do not transmit easily to or among humans. However, avian and swine influenza viruses in particular possess high zoonotic potential and these occasionally recombine with human strains of the flu and can cause pandemics such as the 2009 swine flu.
Zoonoses have different modes of transmission. In direct zoonosis the disease is directly transmitted between non-humans and humans through the air (influenza), bites and saliva (rabies).
How zoonoses spread. Common transmission routes include :
Direct contact with infected animals or their bodily fluids through saliva, blood, urine, feces, bites, scratches.
Indirect contact with contaminated environments or surfaces through bedding, soil and water.
Vector-borne transmission via insects like mosquitoes, fleas or ticks.
Foodborne transmission through contaminated meat, eggs, or produce and undercooked meat, raw milk, contaminated produce.
Snakes can transmit several zoonotic diseases to humans, primarily through bacteria and parasites, with Salmonella being the most common.
Salmonella is the most frequently reported zoonotic pathogen in snakes. Most snakes carry various strains in their intestinal tract without showing symptoms, shedding the bacteria intermittently or continuously in their feces. Humans can acquire salmonellosis through the fecal-oral route, often via contaminated hands, surfaces, or water.
Symptoms in humans include fever, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and occasionally more severe complications such as septicemia, particularly in children, the elderly, or immunocompromised individuals.
Other bacterial pathogens with zoonotic potential include Mycobacterium species (e.g., M. marinum, M. chelonae), Pseudomonas spp., Aeromonas spp., Klebsiella spp., Serratia spp., and Providencia spp. These bacteria can cause infections ranging from skin lesions to systemic illness, especially in cases of poor hygiene or compromised immune systems.
Parasitic zoonoses are diseases caused by parasitic organisms that can be transmitted from animals to humans. These diseases are usually transmitted to humans through contact with contaminated animal feces, contaminated food or water, or through the bites of infected insects and other vectors. In addition, people who work with animals, such as farmers, veterinarians, and animal handlers, are at increased risk of contracting parasitic zoonoses.
The most common parasitic zoonoses include toxoplasmosis, malaria, leishmaniasis, giardiasis, and cryptosporidiosis. These diseases are usually transmitted to humans through contact with contaminated animal feces, contaminated food or water, or through the bites of infected insects and other vectors.
Snakes can host pentastomids, worm-like parasites that mature in the respiratory system. Humans may contract pentastomiasis by ingesting contaminated snake meat or contacting secretions or feces. Other internal parasites, including helminths and protozoa like Cryptosporidium and Giardia, can also be shed in feces and infect humans if proper hygiene is not maintained.
While snakes are not common vectors for viral diseases, they can carry pathogens that contribute to secondary infections in humans. Viral infections in snakes, such as inclusion body disease, primarily affect the snake itself but may indirectly increase the risk of bacterial transmission through weakened immunity and secondary infections.
Snakes can carry a variety of zoonotic pathogens, with Salmonella and parasitic infections posing the greatest risk to humans. While most infections are preventable with proper hygiene and handling practices, vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals should exercise extra caution when interacting with snakes.
Transmission and Prevention : The primary route of zoonotic transmission from snakes to humans is fecal-oral, often via contaminated hands, enclosures, or surfaces.
Preventive measures include :
Washing hands thoroughly after handling snakes or cleaning enclosures.
Wearing gloves when cleaning tanks or handling waste.
Avoiding contact between snakes and food, drinks, or infants.
Proper enclosure hygiene, including separate cleaning tools and safe disposal of waste.
Regular veterinary check-ups for pet snakes to monitor for pathogens.

Common Snake-Borne Diseases.

Parasitic Infections :
Snakes can carry parasites like pentastomids, roundworms, tapeworms, Cryptosporidium, and Giardia. Humans may contract these through ingestion of undercooked snake meat, contaminated water, or contact with feces or secretions. Pentastomiasis, for example, is a serious infection transmitted orally from snake tissues or contaminated surfaces.
Viral Infections :
Evidence of viral transmission from snakes to humans is limited, but research continues on potential zoonotic viruses. These are considered rare compared to bacterial or parasitic infections.
Botulism :
Although uncommon, snakes can theoretically carry Clostridium botulinum, which produces botulinum toxin. Human infection is usually linked to contaminated food, but transmission via snake contact or wounds is possible.
Transmission Routes :
Bites : Direct introduction of bacteria or venom into the bloodstream.
Fecal-Oral Route : Contact with snake feces or contaminated surfaces, then touching the mouth.
Contaminated Surfaces : Enclosures, rocks, water sources, or handling equipment can harbor pathogens.
Prevention Measures :
Hand Hygiene : Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds after handling snakes or cleaning enclosures.
Enclosure Sanitation : Disinfect cages weekly using validated disinfectants like diluted bleach or quaternary ammonium compounds.
Avoid Cross-Contamination : Keep snakes away from food preparation areas and supervise children when interacting with reptiles.
Protect Vulnerable Individuals : Children under five, the elderly, pregnant women, and immunocompromised individuals should avoid direct contact with snakes.
Proper Handling : Use gloves when cleaning enclosures or handling snakes, and avoid touching your face during interaction.
While the risk of contracting diseases from snakes is relatively low, Salmonella and parasitic infections are the most common concerns, and proper hygiene and handling practices are essential to minimize risk.
